Karen Potter

Registered Psychologist/Accredited Mental Health Social Worker - Start Talking Telehealth

Karen is a registered Psychologist and Accredited Mental Health Social Worker.  She began working as a Counsellor in 1998 and became interested in and passionate about the perinatal stage and infant-parent relationship very early in her career.

To begin with, Karen worked in the NICU/SCU at the Royal Women's Hospital, as well as in one of the high-risk antenatal clinics.  She later worked for Melbourne IVF and then Sydney IVF, after relocating to Northern NSW for a number of years.  Whilst in Northern NSW she was contracted as a Consultant Infant-Parent Specialist for a local Family Support agency to provide in-home counselling and support to new parents and their babies.  In 2007, Karen established a private practice, initially alongside organisational work and later fully into private practice.

Karen's dedication and passion for this field lead her to undertake additional training to her formal Qualifications.  She completed a Graduate Diploma in Infant-Parent Mental Health (2002) and the Perinatal Intensive Training and Perinatal Loss & Grief Training with the Centre for Perinatal Psychology. In addition, Karen has presented papers at conferences and Maternal & Child Health Centres as well as co-facilitated a variety of groups for expectant and new mothers.

With over 27 years working as a Counsellor, Karen holds a wealth of knowledge and experience that seamlessly combines with a genuine warmth, empathy and capacity to connect deeply with people.  She believes that supporting our first and earliest relationship(s) and this major transitional stage for each parent and couple is fundamental to our later relationships and wellbeing.

Karen's approach combines attachment and developmental theories within a psychodynamic approach. Strategies and practices are also offered, including journaling, mindfulness, parenting skills, cognitive-behavioural strategies, psycho-education and child development/attachment information.
